The Museum collection holds almost one million items: artefacts from archaeological digs, hoards of jewellery and coins, folk costumes, traditional tools, applied art, domestic items, photographs, documents, maps, engravings, paintings and other Latvian historical material.  The collections of the museum are divided into five departments.
